The GM Pump Mounted  Driver – or “PMD” as it is known,  is the Achilles heel of the computer controlled 6.5 liter GM Diesel engine.

Lots of owners of vehicles with this engine talk of PMD Relocation and carrying a spare because it can and will fail unexpectedly leaving you with absolutely no way to start the vehicle.  The common warnings are stalling, hard starting, and cut-offs

This is true and both pieces of advice are valid; however the PMD does warn you of impending failure in several subtle ways that if you just take notice can save you lots of headache.  The easiest to see is early rough running and high current draw.

This is a downlkad file that shows the "technical way" to diagnosis of a bad or failing PMD and how to easiest unplug and relocate the PMD elsewhere

A PMD that fails and cuts off your engine - will cause you to loose an ability to brake or steer effectively - as you will loose power steering and - as most vehicles with this engine have - hydroboost braking assist.

It is no joke

FROM ENGINE FAILURE, DUE TO STALLING, RESULTING IN LOSS OF POWER, LIMITED OR LOSS OF BRAKES, LIMITED OR LOSS OF STEERING THAT COULD RESULT IN A CAR CRASH!

A Statement from Stanadyne Corporation June 21, 2010:

"We could face potential product liability claims relating to products we manufacture or distribute.

We face exposure to product liability claims if the use of our products is alleged to have resulted in injury or other adverse effects. We currently maintain product liability insurance coverage, but we may not be able to obtain such insurance on acceptable terms in the future, if at all, and any such insurance may not provide adequate coverage against potential claims. Product liability claims can be expensive to defend and can divert the attention of management and other personnel for long periods of time, regardless of the ultimate outcome. An unsuccessful product liability defense could have a material adverse effect on our business, financial condition, results of operations or our ability to make payments on our obligations when due. In addition, our business depends on the strong brand reputation we have developed. If this reputation is damaged, we may face difficulty in maintaining pricing positions with respect to some of our products, which would reduce net sales and profitability. "

A PMD that cuts off your egnine in traffic leaves you unexpectedly without usually easy braking or steeering.

Relocate it and / or by putting a NEW one on now  (In the pic the PMD is the square grey thing on the left side front)

This purchase make available to you through your email immediately a 7 page PDF file that has wiring diagrams and explanations of the PMD operational theory on how to diagnosis it - the GM way.
